Re: Updated Guidance on Driver and Traffic Safety Education (In Part)

On August 26, 2020, in response to COVID-19, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) issued the following updated guidance on Driver and Traffic Safety Education (DTSE):

Programs were given the option of allowing students to complete the 24 hours of laboratory (in-vehicle) instruction under the supervision of a parent/guardian holding a valid New York State driver's license.

Programs were also given the option of allowing the 24 hours of classroom instruction to be completed remotely.

Based on health and safety guidance provided by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) on August 22, 2022 related to COVID-19, use of the above options will expire on June 30, 2023. At that time, all NYS Driver Education Programs must return to in-person classroom instruction. NYS Driver Education Programs will no longer have the option of allowing students to complete the 24 hours of laboratory (In Car) instruction under the supervision of a parent/guardian.
